Liverpool captain Van Dijk talked about the behavior of a small number of Crystal Palace fans at the silence ceremony held by Liverpool striker Jota, who had passed away. The silence ceremony was originally scheduled to be held before the Community Shield Cup, but due to the interference of a few fans, the ceremony was forced to end early because the Crystal Palace fans at the stadium were singing. They did not realize that the referee had blew the whistle and began to pay silence for Jota and his brother who died in a car accident in July. Other Crystal Palace fans in the stands tried to calm these noisy fans, but failed, instead creating more noise in the process. Liverpool fans on the other end booed. As the noise in the field became louder, referee Kavana finally decided to end the tribute ceremony in advance.

Speaking of this, Van Dijk said, "Yes, I'm disappointed. This is the only thing I can say. Many people try to calm the scene, but obviously it's useless. It's the thing. You can't control, how many people are here in total? Eighty thousand people, so it's really disappointing to hear something like this. But if those people can go home with peace of mind, then..."
