Why do cats stare at the wall?

There may be a number of reasons why your cat suddenly likes to stare at the wall. Some people may joke (or even seriously think) that their cat is watching ghosts or other supernatural entities. However, there may be a more logical and natural reason for this. Most of the reasons your cat may stare at your walls are related to cats’ natural curiosity and the fact that cats are both predators and prey.

They can see something

The cats have a keen visual sense. While they may not have as many cones as we have in their eyes—which means they don’t see as many colors—they have more cones and can be seen very clearly in low light. Their vision is also wider than ours. In fact, your cat can have vision spans 200 degrees, while ours only have 180 degrees. This means your cat’s peripheral vision is much wider than that of humans. You might think your cat is staring at nothing, but they might actually be looking at a bug or a shadow on the wall.

cats may also have episodic memory. This is a special type of long-term memory that allows cats to remember certain events, situations, and experiences. This means your cat can remember the reflection of the sun dancing at a specific part of a specific wall at a specific time of the day. So if your cat is staring at the same wall at the same time of the day, they may just be waiting for their favorite game.

What can they hear?

cats have incredible hearing. In fact, they can hear a wider frequency than many other mammals, including humans and dogs! So your cat may hear something you can't hear! Not only will buildings settle down, they also have things like pipes and ducts in them. Your cat may hear water flowing through the pipe or air hissing through it. Of course, our home is not impossible for outside animals to enter. If mice or other animals enter your home, your cat may stare at the wall because they can hear them running around. However, the sound does not necessarily come from inside the wall. If you live in an apartment building, your cat may hear neighbors through the wall, even if they seem to be fairly quiet neighbors to you.

When should you worry?

In some cases, your cat is looking at the wall may indicate a medical problem.

·Cat Cognitive Dysfunction

Some older cats may experience a disease formally known as cognitive dysfunction in felines, but are often called cat dementia. This is not much different from people's dementia and aging. Cats with cognitive dysfunction may howl loudly at night and may stare at the blank wall in confusion.

·Cat Sensory Allergy Syndrome

If your cat is not only staring at the blank wall, but also actively attacking its tail, madly starting to comb the roots of the tail from nowhere, or if they seem to be too sensitive to touch, they may have Feline Sensory Allergy Syndrome. This disease has only been recognized and described recently. This is not a common diagnosis, but it is not clear whether this is because it does not occur frequently or because it is difficult to understand cats’ normal behavior in a veterinary environment. Cats with sensory allergy syndrome usually change from a manic state of actively combing their hair and slapping their tails to an almost trance-like state of staring at the walls. If you notice any of these symptoms, try getting the video on your phone. Capturing cat behavior in videos can greatly help your veterinarian diagnose any medical cause of strange behavior in the family. There are many reasons why cats can stare at the wall. Most of the time, they just see or hear something we don't see or hear and are watching it closely or trying to figure out what it might be.
